I imagine for those who are ingrained on the disparity between a 50 point kill (or 25 point kill assist) and just waggling sticks and buttons for several minutes to only uncontestedly die and get nowhere, the idea of having a middle ground will be a 'why have a middle ground??' moment.
Depends if CCP is trying for new players. Not everyone really digs climbing sloping, sliding hills to then just die after X minutes of that with nothing to show for it (ie, no point gain or anything) since someone in the best gear just turns up and kills you.
Let's say you have tactical bonuses - for a number of things. Once you get 25 tactical points, you get 25 war points and your tac points reset. If you get a kill then your tac points reset (and you do not accumulate any for 1 minute after a kill) - this is for folks who aren't getting kills.
- Something like even getting a sniper round NEAR a taget you have scoped will get you a tac point.
Hit the shield of a guy - if you don't get a kill assist, you get a tac point.
Even spray some bullets near them and you get a tac point as well.
Proximity to objectives, once every minute, gain a tac point.
Start hacking an objective or instillation, get a tac point.
Get within long range of an objective (ie, you have gotten out of the MCC and moved onto the battlefield), get a tac point once every five minutes.
Spot a tank, get a tac point once every minute.
Don't insta die on a sniper hit, gain a tac point (once per minute)
Endure an orbital strike.
And so on.
The idea is that when some other team full of gear, tanks, drop ships, top of the line sniper rifles has pinned you down, gameplay sucks - no, you're not going to get points. This is why people just AFK - because your reward system, at that point, rewards doing noting. Tac points would reward actually doing stuff.
I know some people love having no middle ground - either kill or go without (so if you have less gear, go without (apart from what you can get from going AFK)) - 99% these are the same people who have like a year of SP under their belt and are the ones with the tanks, top sniper rifles, etc.
CCP, if you're disinterested in gaining a further audience, then just close the sign up option. Because right now your making a game that, in significant portions, just sucks. In large chunks there is no game, just the option of AFK or spend time navigating their character to their death.
But I'm guessing the CCP designers don't play new characters past academy (not for more than five minutes, anyway) and so think it all works because they sit on multi million SP characters.
Plenty talk about the proto wall - but really the problem is is that it's a wall that blocks any point gain/game play.
For those who enjoy nagivating a maze for two minutes only to die 95% of the time and start over with nothing to show (apart from what could be gained from going AFK), I have some serious doubts.
Anyway, gave the idea of telling you a problem a shot. The games a 'diamond in the rough' (putting it nicely) right now, but there's a hell of alot of rough. Which just makes a sucky game.
Really, take an example like: All objectives are taken, tanks and drop ships are moving in - you try and snipe some enemies - you hit them, but they live because they do and no one kills any of the hurt ones because they have your side that locked down (or your side is sensibly AFK in the MCC, because they realise the gameplay sucks while you are still trying to actually play) - you get hit twice by enemy snipers, survive long enough to run down the hill and out of line of sight. Then they call an orbital bombardment on your position. You were the only one there.
Do you think this will get you customers?
Only mad people would think that.
I'm not even asking for nerfs on tanks or sniper rifles or even orbital bombardments.
Just some capacity to gain points when you are unlikely to kill enemies and unlikely to retake any (surviving) instilations.
The funny thing is, I know some people really do think the above example is good gameplay - as if that'll be good for gaining customers.
